Hi Men,

I hope you are all well and enjoying the start to YOUR year!!

I say YOUR year as I’d encourage you to make it your year! Make it happen, make YOU happen!!

Go for it with everything you have and fully engage in what God has for you! Then be expectant to see God move!! BCC is is having it’s best start ever to a year!

Caleb in Joshua 14 makes a statement asking for his promised inheritance! He speaks with confidence and authority and declares that he has wholeheartedly pursued the promise of God! He expects to be rewarded!

When we are fully given over to the things of God, He gives us a confidence that only he can give! Be expectant, go for it! ( I reckon we already have!)

I’m very excited about 2011:

On FRIDAY 18th February we have a *PASTA* night!! The Italian job, Love it!

Pastor James will be speaking to the BLOKES! Then we’ll tuck into pasta!! It starts at 8.30pm and we’ll be finished by 10.00. I want to encourage you to be at this, it’s going to be sensational!! Tickets are on sale NOW from reception.

Also this year we have 4 major events, these were all designed so that blokes can hang out and bring a friend! Invite someone and why not demonstrate our culture and pay for them?!

*BOWLING* on 1st March is a must!! Again tickets will be available soon, get’em quick as there are limited spaces!

You don’t wanna miss it!! Building real blokes. Men that are solid! Tough, Transparent and Trusted!! I believe that’s what society is looking for!

Christmas on a Budget

This week a student asked me if I could help her with her University assignment.

She was working on a piece about ‘Christmas on a budget’ and wanted to know if I had any tips as Centre Manager of Stoke on Trent’s CAP Centre.

I took a few moments to think and I came up with the following.  I thought you may like to read them:

1. Use cash and not plastic! You will most likely spend less money if you carry the cash because you will have to think about it. Perhaps, at the beginning of the month you could even take out the cash that you plan to spend and put them into separate labeled envelopes or containers (e.g. food, petrol, leisure, gifts etc.)
2. Decide what you have to spend and stick to it. Work out from your incomings how much money you have to spend, make a list and budget carefully. Discipline yourself.
3. If you’re struggling for cash don’t suffer in silence. Most people’s finances are tight at Christmas time so don’t be afraid to tell your friends and family. Perhaps you could even club together with friends and family and jointly buy people something they would like without overspending
4. Buy fewer presents and cheaper trimmings. They all add to the fun without costing very much.
5. Never take out a Christmas loan! What may look like a good deal on paper can quickly lead to a slippery slope of monthly repayments, bank charges and huge interest rates that will leave you in a worse state than before. Always read the small print!
6. Don’t feel guilty if you can’t afford the latest present. Your love and affection will last longer in the memory than any material thing can. It sounds very cheesy but the ‘thought‘ does count for a lot.
7. Don’t fall into the trap of reciprocal gift giving and don’t buy out of obligation.Just because somebody bought you a present last year or have spent money on you this year, you should feel under no pressure to do the same for them. It is better to give than to receive, so allow them to be ‘more blessed.’
8. Enjoy all the low cost things on offer. For example the lights in town, get togethers,  making mince pies,  playing family board games,  school nativity. There are somethings that money can’t buy.

I love BCC because it is the kind of church I imagine God had in mind when he created us! I started at BCC last year after doing The Alpha course and I was struck by its ‘no messing’ approach to getting out there and doing what I believe God loves to see; helping those in need, doing something for nothing, teaching us how to be better people, leading better lives and reaching those that don’t yet understand Him. However, what I most love about BCC is that it gives me the opportunity on Sundays to show my gratitude to God for all that He has done in a ‘Student friendly’ way, i.e. by having a party!

Cat’s Story

I grew up in a religious household, but I can honestly say I was never in touch with my religion. Church to me was just another Sunday activity. When I moved to university I met a friend who was taking part in the Alpha Course at Bethel City Church. She persuaded me to join her one Sunday at BCC and from that day my life changed for the better. I joined a church and gained a family.

Bethel City Church is a church that touches lives in the most unexpected ways. As a student, I feel like I have been accepted into a community that fits me as an individual. BCC offers so many activities to take part in and it allows everyone to express their talents and skills. Speaking from personal experience, I have enjoyed displaying my skills as a barista on the Café Team.

The church shows great commitment to people; from organising a student bus every Sunday to social activities such as barbeques or going to the cinema as well as City Life Pods. Having moved to a new a city and being away from home, it wasn’t easy at times, but we have an outstanding Student Pastor Ben (Ben Rocks!!), who has made sure that we always have help when we need it.

I have made a lot of friends at BCC and I have taken part in the most exciting, life-changing activities, and I don’t see myself leaving BCC anytime soon.
